Obama Senate Questions

While it seemed very cordial, Obama was able to hit Petraeus and Crocker very hard. Obama took them down a path. First, on Al Qaeda on Iraq. He got Petraeus to agree with him that the total elimination of Al Qaeda is an impossible standard for withdrawal. Next he goes after Crocker's points about Iranian influence, pointing out that both Iran and Al Qaeda  are in Iraq because we invaded and that we can not expect to eliminate Iranian involvement.

Then came the hammer. Obama pointed out that if the definition of success is put so high - no Al Qaeda, no Iranian influence, a prosperous diverse democracy we will be there forever. He then points out that we still, after 8 hours of testimony, have no definition of success.

Crocker's weak response its "hard and complicated."

And he points out, something that we have been saying all day, they have no definition of success.

He said:

"The problem I have is that if the definition of success is so high, no traces of Al Qaeda and no possibility of reconstitution, a highly effective Iraqi government, a democratic multi ethnic, multi sectarian functioning democracy, no Iranian influence, at least not the kind that we like, then that portends the possibility of us staying for 20 or 30 years."

Verdict? Impressive! As I listened to him, I could almost feel Gen. Petraus and Amb. Crocker acknowledge that this guy asking the questions might be their next commander in chief. You could see the respect, the deference in their tone and answers. You could almost imagine them standing up and saluting. As for the substance, it was like Obama was sincerely trying to find out a solution to the Iraq mess.

The man is intelligent, very very intelligent. Everybody was waiting for this, even the Senators.

Re: Obama Senate Questions (none / 0)

I liked you diary until the last few sentences, which fell into idolatry.

Re: Obama Senate Questions (2.00 / 0)

I think idolatry is too strong a term.

Maybe, but the diary definitely devolved into something that resembled... reverence/awe.

I mean, no offense to the diarist, but... what? Isn't that a bit much? I don't know, there's almost something almost creepy about it. "You could almost imagine them standing up and saluting." Most people wouldn't have even thought to imagine it. Really kind of weird.

Re: Obama Senate Questions (2.00 / 1)

Just watched his cross questioning of Condi Rice in 2005, and his distinction between 'terror' and 'tyranny' in US military intervention.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCiv1f3Da MA&eurl

Obama made the point that the Iraq invasion was initially justified to counter 'terror', and then the goalposts shifted to 'removing tyranny'. He made the point that tyrannies in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere did not usually incur US invasions. Neither did Terror in Darfur.

I really don't see, how in the light of his Crocker Petraeus questioning, and this earlier exchange from the first year at the Senate, that Obama can be dismissed as a 'lightweight' on foreign policy. His trenchant criticism of the Iraq invasion, implementation and now the surge marks him out as the smartest kid on the block in US foreign politics.

Re: Obama Senate Questions (none / 0)

Just watched the exchange on talkingpoints memo.

I thought Obama was a bit stumbling and tired during the Q&A with Petraeus and Crocker. But I thought his last statement/question;

"If we had the current status quo but our troops had been drawn down, would that satisfy our criteria?"

He was looking for an endpoint, and a definition of such which wasn't too high (no one jot al qaeda, no Iranian influence). But Crocker couldn't give him a definition of success. It drove a nail through the failed strategy, and the arguments against withdrawal.

Can you blam him. (none / 0)

Even Major Garrett, of FOX NEWS, seems to show Obama idolatry, calling him non-partisan and non-confrontational. And yeah, Gen. Petraus and Amb. Crocker did appear to show Obama "presidential" respect and deference, where as they just seemed to skip past McCain and Clinton.

Third diary today, eh?

...What? How silly. He got no special treatment. They just answered him. You're seeing things which aren't there.

Re: Obama Senate Questions (none / 0)

I thought he was just campaigning again. Really, we already know that going into Iraq was a blunder - the question is, what to do next.
